CREATIVE STRATEGIES: THE CONCEPT ALBUM

The concept album has been a mainstay for folk, jazz, and rock for many decades. Who can forget Tommy, A Love Supreme, The Mothership Connection, Zen Arcade, Bitter Tears, Dust Bowl Ballads, Operation Mindcrime, or Shoot Out the Lights?  The members of this class will compose and perform a concept album together at F&R. We’ll look at the history and nature of concept albums and then choose a concept and dive into it. Strategies for instant songwriting as well as expressing “the concept” through both music and words will be explored. Creating your own concept album can be a terrific motivation for breaking writer’s block. The class will finally perform the album together.
